Packaging Design Refresh

The Scattergories packaging refresh modernized a beloved classic whose brand presence had grown stagnant. With consumers still gravitating toward the “retro” version, the visual identity was evolved to honor existing equity while re-energizing the brand for a new generation, resulting in packaging designed to feel bold, modern, and party-worthy.

Updated illustrations, a refined logo and icon mark, and clearer front-of-pack storytelling helped differentiate Scattergories from stale competitor graphics, delivering a sharper, more contemporary expression that appeals to both longtime fans and new players.

The Process

To determine the strongest direction, the team developed multiple illustration styles and front-of-pack options ranging from abstract shapes to category item collages and tiled character grids. These concepts were tested with both existing Scattergories players and new family/party consumers to measure clarity, nostalgia, shelf impact, and modern appeal.

Insights from testing guided refinements to the logo, icon mark, color balance, and illustration style. The final direction balanced retro recognition with fresh energy, delivering a pack system that stands out visually and reconnects with what players love most about the game.

Scattergories History

Scattergories debuted in the late 1980s with an iconic identity created by Sibley Design—defined by the bold red box, expressive head icon, and quirky logotype. Over time, later packaging iterations drifted away from this look, resulting in a child-like style that diluted the brand’s equity.

Consumer research confirmed that players still associated the “retro” design with quality and authenticity. Restoring these foundational elements became central to the refresh, grounding the new system in the brand’s heritage while modernizing it for today’s audience.
